How to Install Mud Flaps on a Motorcycle
- 1). Open the mudflap kit and locate the mudflap drill guide bar. The bar has three sets of three holes and a notch on one end. The remaining end of the bar is curved.
- 2). Position the bar perpendicular to the bottom edge of the rear fender with the curved end of the bar lined against the bottom edge and the notched end pointing upward.
- 3). Tape the corners of the bar in place on the fender.
- 4). Set the pointed end of the hole punch inside the top hole on the second set of holes in the bar. Hammer the flat end of the hole punch to outline the hole with an indentation. Indent the remaining two holes in the second set of holes using the same method.
- 5). Hold the wood board between the rear wheel and fender. Consult the instructions that came with your mudflap kit for details regarding the correct drill bit size to use, as the size differs for each kit. Drill pilot holes in the indented holes you made in the previous step.
- 6). Drill through the same holes with a wider drill bit to increase the size of the holes. Consult the instructions that came with your mudflap kit for details regarding the exact size of the needed drill bit, as the size will differ for each kit.
- 7). Peel off the tape holding the guide bar to the fender and set the guide bar aside. Pull the wood board out from between the rear wheel and fender and set it aside. Insert the mud flap on the underside of the rear fender. Align the holes on the mudflap with the holes that you have drilled in the fender.
- 8). Push the cap bolt into the top center hole in the mudflap and through the corresponding hole you have drilled into the fender. Bolt the cap in place with the hex head wrench.
- 9). Push the washer down onto the threading of the cap bolt. Twist the nut onto the threading for the cap bolt manually.
- 10
Repeat steps 8 and 9 to install the remaining cap screws through the holes in the mudflap and the drilled holes in the rear fender. Slide the washers onto the threaded sections of the cap bolts and twist the nuts onto th threaded sections of the cap bolts. - 11
Push the end of the hex wrench into the center of the top cap bolt. Secure the nut tightly with the socket wrench and sockets while holding the hex wrench down. Repeat to secure the remaining cap bolts.
