Sod Webworm

  • Many species of sod webworm, the larval form of several species of adult moth, can create problems for lawn owners. Sod webworms are above-ground feeders, meaning that they cause most of their damage to the visible portions of grass blades. As the sod webworms develop, they notch grass blades off and pull them underground for further feeding, imparting the entire lawn with intermittent brown patches when feeding has been most extensive. Sod webworms spend most of their time in the soil thatch layer near the surface before pupating into adult moths, so a control option that attacks the webworms in the thatch layer can be very effective.
