How to Take out Countertops
- 1). Remove all appliances from the countertop and turn off any plumbing under the sink. Turn the valves on the pipes in the opposite direction until they stop. Turn on the faucet to ensure the water is off. Place plastic tarps or old sheets over the kitchen flooring to catch residue as you remove the countertop.
- 2). Unscrew any screws in the countertop using a flat or Phillips screwdriver.
- 3). Position a wide-mouth putty knife at the corner of the sink. Push the putty knife under the sink and pull up on the handle. Work the putty knife around the entire sink. Remove the sink after loosening it completely from the countertop.
- 4). Work a pry bar between the countertop and the bottom cabinet, starting at one end of the counter. Push the pry bar handle down, dislodging the countertop from the cabinet. Move down 2 to 3 feet and repeat the process. Work your way down the front of the countertop until it is completely loosened from the cabinet.
- 5). Push a wide-mouth putty knife between the back of the countertop and the wall until the countertop is completely dislodged. Keep the putty knife as flush as possible against the wall to avoid making gouges in the sheetrock.
