Oil Usage Facts
- The United States and Canada use more oil per capita than any other nation in the world, according to the EIA. Asia represents the next largest consumer. In general, developed countries use much more oil than developing countries.
- About 72 percent of oil consumption in the US is used for transportation. Oil supplies over 99 percent of fuel used in automobiles, according to the US Department of Energy. Most regions of the world, in contrast, rely on oil mainly for heating and energy.
- Oil represents a nonrenewable resource, which means we cannot create more once we exhaust our sources. Since the US imports about half its crude oil and petroleum products, the country is also susceptible to disruptions in foreign oil supplies. The US keeps an emergency reserve of oil in case a disruption occurs.
