How to Build a Workbench With Shelves
- 1). Place the 18-inch and the 30-inch 2-by-4s on a worktable. Create three rectangles with the lumber, securing the 18-inch pieces between the 30-inch pieces on their ends. Secure them with 3-inch drywall screws.
- 2). Apply glue to the top edge on the rectangles. Set the three pieces of plywood measuring 30-by-21 inches on the rectangles and secure them with 6-penny finish nails. These are the shelves for the workbench.
- 3). Put the 6½-by-6½-by-¾-inch pieces on a worktable along with the 28½-by-6½-by-¾-inch pieces. Secure the 28½-inch pieces between the 6½-inch pieces to create a rectangle with 6-penny finish nails.
- 4). Insert the 5-by-6½-by-¾-inch pieces into the assembly, space them 6 9/16 inches apart and secure them with 6-penny finish nails. Turn the assembly so the openings are facing up. Secure the 30-by-6-by-¾-inch piece to the rectangle with 6-penny finish nails. This is the tool storage compartment.
- 5). Lay the 2-by-4-by-37¼-inch lumber on the worktable. Measure from end and make marks at 14¼, 16½, 28½ and 30¾ inches. Mark the end beyond the last mark as the top. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the width of the lumber.
- 6). Stand one of the 2-by-4s on its long edge. Set another one on top of the edge creating an “L” shape. Secure the two pieces with 10-penny box nails. These are the legs for the workbench.
- 1). Separate two of the legs so the shelves fit between them. Situate the legs so the 5-inch width is facing down. Place one on the shelves of the bottom end of the legs and secure it to the legs with 8-penny box nails.
- 2). Secure the remaining shelves in the same manner on the lines drawn on the legs. Separate the remaining two legs as before. Turn the bench over and set it on the legs. Align the shelves with the lines drawn and secure them to the legs with 8-penny box nails.
- 3). Set the workbench with shelves upright on the floor. Put the tool storage compartment on the top shelf and pull it up to just behind the 2-by-4 legs. Secure it to the legs with 2-inch drywall screws. Next, secure the 33-by-24-by-¾-inch piece to the tops of the legs with 6-penny finish nails.
