How to Grow Soy Beans in Georgia
- 1). Plant soybeans several weeks after the last frost in Georgia. This gives the soil plenty of time to thaw and warm before planting. In most areas of Georgia, April is the ideal time for planting soybeans.
- 2). Choose the right site for soybeans, which need full sun and good drainage. Amend Georgia soil, which tends to be rich in clay, with a mixture of 1/3 quick-draining soil, 1/3 compost and 1/3 aged manure. Soybeans prefer good drainage and moist, rich soil. Mix the amendment into the top foot of your planting site.
- 3). Plant soybean seeds 1 1/2 inch deep and at least 2 inches apart. Leave 25 to 30 inches between soybean rows. Give the soybeans 10-10-10 fertilizer during planting, according to the manufacturer directions. Water the soybeans with 2 inches of water at planting to help them establish.
- 4). Water soybeans again three days after planting, with 1 to 2 inches of water to aid in germination. Soybeans should sprout within a week. Maintain weekly waterings of 2 inches of water to maintain soil moisture. Soybeans will bloom in July and August.
