When Is the Correct Time to Plant Fruit Trees?
- April or early May is the ideal planting time for fruit trees in most areas of North America. Wait until the soil is workable. Allow waterlogged soil drain and until soil no longer sticks to a garden shovel.
- Plan on a spring planting, as there are more varieties of fruit trees available then. Spring planting has the advantage of giving the fruit tree time for good root establishment before winter. Fall-planted trees may suffer from poor root anchoring, severe low temperature exposure and damage caused by winter-feeding animals.
- Water the fruit trees once they are planted. Each tree needs 5 gallons of water each week for the entire growing season. This encourages root growth and supplements any root damage that occurred during planting.
