How to Build Storage Shelves for a Craft Room
- 1). Measure the length of the area where you want to install the storage shelves with a tape measure. Measure the height of the area where you plan to install the storage shelves. Allow 24 inches between each shelf.
- 2). Cut the hardwood boards to fit the length measurements using a table saw. To avoid warping, use a hardwood such as oak.
- 3). Sand the edges of each board with 600-grit sandpaper, and then graduate to 800-grit, 1000-grit and then 1200-grit sandpaper. This will smooth out the edges of the shelf from the saw.
- 4). Place two decorative shelf brackets on the bottom of each self. Secure the brackets to the bottom of the shelf with the screws supplied with the brackets.
- 5). Place the first shelf in the highest location where you plan to install the shelves. Place a level on the shelf and then position the shelf so it rests level on the wall. Mark the mounting holes on the mounting bracket onto the wall.
- 6). Drill holes large enough for wall anchors into the wall and then pound the wall anchors into the wall with a hammer.
- 7). Place the shelf over the anchors and then secure the shelf to the anchors with the screws supplied with the bracket.
- 8). Measure 24 inches down from the first shelf and install the second shelf just as you installed the first. Repeat this with each additional shelf.
