Ghostwriting: The Other Side
A few days ago I wrote an article titled "7 Intriguing Benefits of Ghostwriting," well like anything in life, there's always another side to the coin. So here is the other side, and fortunately the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. In reality, it's all a matter of perspective. What I may see as disadvantages may not appear to be so to another ghostwriter, and that's okay because we each decide individually.
Though we are professional ghostwriters writing articles, reports, stories, books, eBooks, autobiographies, marketing materials, and sometimes even music, there is a downside to all the work that goes into those writing projects. Here are just a few from my experience, and of course, I encourage you to share others I may be missing.
1. No Royalty Fees: Actually, depending on the Buyer, sometimes there is a Royalty Fee paid to the ghostwriter but most of the time there is none. This can be disadvantageous because your work is out there making somebody money except the ghost writer. It's also a fact that some books continue to make money for years and years after being published. That's just how talented some ghostwriters are!
2. Giving up Copyrights: This may be a tough one for some beginning ghostwriters. I know I had a real hard time with this one in the beginning, but like anything else you adjust and move on. You get no credit for your writing. Your name appears nowhere in the published work and of course you know that this is due to confidentiality. Though you may feel extremely proud of your masterpiece and feel like you're on top of the world on this one, you get no credit.
3. Time Consuming: This one can be a big deal because quality work does take time and energy. It takes being resourceful and dedicated. Sometimes the family takes a back seat for an intense writing project that entails doing in-depth research. Unfortunately, this can also take a toll on intimate relationships.
As ghostwriters we do make these agreements prior to starting the work, so we are well aware of the guidelines, but it seems that halfway through the writing project sometimes we find ourselves asking, "Hey, what's in it for me?" So next time you ask yourself this question, I encourage you to read my previous article "7 Intriguing Benefits of Ghostwriting" it will give you a nice boost.
