How do I Protect a Kitchen Countertop From Electric Skillets, Crockpots, Etc.?
- 1). Install heat-resistant countertops if you are having your home built or kitchen remodeled. Choose heat-resistant counters such as solid-surfacing or engineered stone. Laminate countertops are popular, easy to clean and inexpensive, but will easily warp if exposed too much heat.
- 2). Purchase crock pots or electrical skillets that have the attached bumper feet that lifts the electrical appliance off the counter, preventing the heat from touching the countertop.
- 3). Place the electrical appliance on a cutting board or trivet to reduce the risk of heat damage or fire. Place bumper feet on the bottom of each corner of the cutting board to allow "sufficient air flow between the cutting board and the countertop," advises Complete Solid Surface Refinishing. About a ¼-inch clearance is ideal to protect the countertop from the heat that radiates from the electrical appliance.
- 4). Turn off the appliance immediately after the food is done and wait until it cools down before removing from the cutting board or trivet.
