How to Change the Sway Bar on a 1998 Ford Contour
- 1). Raise the front end of the vehicle up in the air by placing it onto the jack stands. Once the vehicle is raised, remove the front wheels.
- 2). Disconnect the link connecting the stabilizer bar to the strut. Hold the ball-stud in place with the 8mm wrench while removing the retaining nut with a different wrench.
- 3). Remove the nuts connecting the steering gear to the large U-shaped sub-frame with the torque wrench and push the steering gear off the sub-frame by hand.
- 4). Remove the two sub-frame bolts at the rear and remove the bracket bolts with the torque wrench and pry the brackets off the bushings.
- 1). Position the replacement sway bar onto the sub-frame and make sure the bushings are in the correct locations. Tighten the U-shaped bar's mounting bolts to between 22 and 29 foot pounds with the torque wrench.
- 2). Raise the sub-frame with the floor jacks and install the sub-frame mounting bolts to between 57 and 75 foot pounds of torque.
- 3). Connect the sway bar links to the bar by hand and tighten the nuts between 35 and 46 foot pounds with the torque wrench.
- 4). Reconnect the wheels to the vehicle and lower the vehicle to the floor.
