Care of Guzmania
- 1). Plant your Guzmania in a loose, well-draining planting medium. Commercial potting soil is not the best for these plants, according to the University of Florida. Instead, choose a mixture of tree-fern bark, peat moss, sand or other soilless combination.
- 2). Place the plant in a location where it will receive some indirect light. Low-light conditions are best for these plants, which have thin, somewhat fragile foliage that can be scorched by the hot, direct rays of the sun. A few hours of indirect morning sun work well for Guzmanias.
- 3). Keep the temperatures around your plant consistently warm. Temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit during the day and mid-60s at night are ideal. Do not place your Guzmania near any cold or hot drafts.
- 4). Provide air circulation for your plant by placing it near an open window or fan for part of the day. This greatly reduces the chances of a fungal infection developing, according to the University of Florida.
- 5). Water by pouring a thin stream down the stem to fill the rosette, as suggested by Denver Plants. Try to avoid wetting the blooming bracts and flowers, if the plant is in bloom. You can also water the planting medium, but always make sure the rosette is also filled with water.
