    • 1). Choose a suitable clear coat product for gold. Many products are specifically made for cars, not gold, so you should browse in your hardware store, looking for a product that will work effectively on gold. Ask the expert in the store if you require help.

    • 2). Tape off any areas that you do not want to receive the clear coat. For instance, you are coating a gold plate that is located within a larger structure, and you only want to coat the gold and not the rest of the object.

    • 3). Wipe your gold surface with a painting preparation solvent to remove any grease, debris or oils that may have gathered on the gold. These contaminants could impede the smoothness of the coat.

    • 4). Spray the gold surface with your clear coat product. Let the gold dry for at least 12 hours.

    • 5). Use a buffer and buffing compound to polish the gold and ensure that you get an attractive shine, as well as the protection that comes from a coat of clear coat.
