    Servicing the Metal Detector Yourself

    • You are probably wondering if you should service the metal detector yourself or send it back to the manufacturer for repairs. Most manufacturers have trained technicians on staff to service appliances. The service centers are usually well aware of changes to circuits and upgrades and should have no difficulties servicing the appliance. Mailing the metal detector to the manufacturer's closest service center rather than to the main headquarters should save you a little in shipping costs. However, it pays to know a little about the metal detector and some things that can go wrong with it.

    Metal Detector Will Not Start

    • If your metal detector will not start, check that the batteries are not corroded. Check that the contacts the battery touches are clean and that the holder for the battery is clean. You may also need to clean the battery contact springs. If all else fails, you may have to replace the battery.

Underwater Metal Detector is Filled With Water

    • If your underwater metal detector is filled with water, you probably did not put the lid on properly. Water can damage any electronic device, but salt water will damage it even more quickly. Use a flat-tip screwdriver to remove the cover and lid that hold the electronics. Flush the metal detector out with water, especially if it was filled with salt water. Dry off everything you can reach with a towel. Use a hair dryer on low to dry whatever water remains. Do not get too close with the hair dryer or you might melt some of the electronics.

Metal Detector Needle Sticks Halfway Up

    • If you have a standard meter on your metal detector and the needle sticks at the halfway point, you probably have a static charge buildup. Wipe over the meter with a damp soapy cloth to remove the static charge.

Cannot Hear Out of Metal Detector Headphones

    • If you do not get any sound out of your metal detector headphones, you probably have a mono phone jack. Switch the stereo switch to mono.

The Menu Screen on the Metal Detector Scrolls

    • If the menu screen on your metal detector begins to scroll, it is because the toggle is stuck in the locked position. Just move the toggle switch to the center position, and the menu will quit scrolling. The switch is located on the handle.
