    • 1). Prepare the planting pot before taking the cutting. Fill a 4-inch plastic pot with equal amounts of sand and perlite until 1 inch from the top. Make sure the pot has at least one drainage hole at its base, or drill if necessary. Mist the growing medium lightly and place the pot aside until you are ready to root the cutting.

    • 2). Put on thick leather gloves and a long-sleeved shirt before you take cuttings from the succulent. Locate a healthy stem that measures 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide and no longer than 5 to 6 inches. Grasp the selected stem firmly with tongs or your gloved hand while you cut through the base of the stem with a sharp, sterilized pruning knife. Make a smooth, straight cut to sever the stem from the parent plant, as opposed to a jagged, uneven cut.

    • 3). Place the cut end of the stem under running water to stop the flow of sap. Similarly, spray cold water over the stump at the base of the parent plant to stop the flow of sap.

    • 4). Dip the moistened base of the cutting in a container filled with rooting hormone powder to facilitate the process of rooting. The powder also covers the end of the cutting, thereby staunching the flow of latex sap. Cover 1 1/2 to 2 inches of the end in powder.

    • 5). Insert a pencil in the center of the potted medium to make way for the cutting. Push the cutting in the pot, with its hormone-covered end over the base. Firm the perlite and sand mix around the end of the cutting so it stands on its own.

    • 6). Spray the cutting lightly so the growing medium is evenly moist. Place the pot in a warm spot with bright but indirect light. The cutting roots in three to four weeks.
