How to Measure the Square Feet of a Property

    • 1). Measure the width and length of a property using the tape measure. If the property is square or rectangular, this is a very simple process.

    • 2). Multiply the width by the length. If the property is 20 feet wide by 40 feet long, its area is 800 square feet.

    • 3). Measure the property in sections if it is an irregular shape. Do this either by measuring different parts of the property separately and adding them together, or by measuring one large square or rectangle that includes the whole property, then measuring the spaces within that square or rectangle that are not part of the property and subtracting them.
