Trying Again

• If you can't install certain updates with Windows Update, removing and re-downloading the updates may fix this problem.
  
  For this, you will need to install a patch that can help you with update installation. Clear the cache of your computer by going to your start menu and typing "services.msc" into the search box, then pressing "Enter." This will bring up a window that handles automatic updates for Windows Update. Right click "Automatic Update" and select "Stop" from the menu.
  
  After stopping automatic updates, find the folder "Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download." You will need to have your hidden folders made visible if they aren't currently. Once you find that folder, delete all the files within it. After that, navigate to "Windows\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache." Delete the files here as well. Then restart Automatic Update.
  
  Windows Update Agent is a useful download to try and get your updates running again. Once you have it downloaded, double-click the file to install it. Restart your computer and try installing the updates again.
  
  

Driver Problems

• Sometimes there may be an error with Windows Update not installing because the update client believes there are too many drivers in your INF system folder. The number that can push Windows Update into not updating isn't specified by Microsoft, but if there is an issue, this may be the cause. If that's the case, you'll need to download a patch in order to fix the problem. After downloading the patch, double-click the file to let it run. It will walk you through the steps necessary to apply the patch. Once it's in place, you should be able to install updates.
  
  

Catroot2 Errors

• There may be corruptions in your Catroot2 folder that are preventing your computer from installing updates properly. Renaming this folder can help with that issue. In your Start menu, click "Run," then enter "cmd" and click "OK." You'll need to enter a series of instructions from the command prompt window, in the following order:
  
  net stop cryptsvc
  ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
  net start cryptsvc
  exit
  
  Be sure to press "Enter" after each command. After that, you'll need to delete temp*.cat files from %systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} if they exist. Then restart your computer.
