    • 1). Open the hood of your Buick, and locate the negative battery cable. Remove the bolt securing the cable to the battery, using a wrench, then remove and isolate the cable from the battery terminal.

    • 2). Place a jack under the front of the car, and raise the driver's side of the car. Secure the car on a jack stand positioned under the frame of the car, then remove the jack.

    • 3). Locate the starter from under the driver's side of the car. Find the two wiring harness connections on the back of the starter solenoid. They are both stud and nut terminals and are marked "B" and "S." Remove the retaining nuts from both terminals, using a socket and ratchet, then remove the wires from the terminals. Make note of which wire came off which terminal; the "B" terminal should have the bigger, red wire.

    • 4). Locate the two mounting bolts at the front of the starter. They install from the bottom of the starter, threading up into the engine block. Remove both bolts with a socket and ratchet while supporting the starter so it does not fall on you. Remove the starter from the engine compartment and set it aside.

    • 5). Lift a new starter into the engine compartment, and position it up against the engine block. Install the two mounting bolts into the holes in the starter, then thread them into the engine block. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft.-pounds of torque with a torque wrench and socket.

    • 6). Connect the two wiring harness connections to the starter solenoid, matching the large red wire to the "B" terminal and the other wire to the "S" terminal. Install the retaining nut on the "B" terminal to 12 ft.-pounds with a torque wrench. Tighten the nut on the "S" terminal to 22 inch-pounds with a torque wrench.

    • 7). Lift the front of the car with a jack, and remove the jack stand. Lower the Buick to the ground and remove the jack from under the car.

    • 8). Connect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal, then tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Test the repair by starting the engine, ensuring the starter is functioning properly.
