How to Change the Belt in a Jeep Cherokee
- 1). Check the fan shroud area or the underside of the hood for the belt-routing diagram. If it is worn or missing, sketch a diagram of the belt routing. Loosen the pivot bolt behind the idler pulley, using the appropriate socket.
- 2). Push the pulley toward the engine to loosen the tension on the belt. Lift the belt off the pulleys.
- 3). Route the new belt on the pulleys, starting with the crankshaft pulley and ending with the idler pulley. Push the idler pulley into the belt to put tension on the belt. Tighten the pivot bolt. Push down on the belt to check for the appropriate tension.
- 1). Check for the belt-routing diagram and sketch a diagram of the belt routing if it is missing. Fit the appropriate socket over the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley. Using the long-handled ratchet on the socket, turn the tensioner pulley toward the engine to loosen tension on the belt.
- 2). Lift the belt off the pulleys. Allow the tensioner to move back into place, but do not let it snap. It is spring-loaded, and could break if allowed to snap into place.
- 3). Route the new belt around the pulleys, starting with the crankshaft pulley and ending with the tensioner pulley. When you get to the tensioner pulley, push the pulley toward the engine and slide the belt onto the pulley. Allow the pulley to gently fall back into place to put tension on the belt. Check to ensure that the tensioner is correct by looking at the arrow on the tensioner pulley guide.
