How to Remove the Timing Belt Gear in a Z31
- 1). Lift the Z31's hood. Use a socket wrench to disconnect the battery.
- 2). Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the fan and radiator shroud.
- 3). Remove the screws from the fan with a Phillips screwdriver, and remove the fan from the engine compartment.
- 4). Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolts from the engine belts and crank pulley. Remove those components from the engine compartment as well.
- 5). Pry off the timing belt cover. Depending on the year of year Z31, you may need to remove a few bolts from the timing belt cover before you can use a flat-head screwdriver to pry it off.
- 6). Remove the bolts from the water pump and pull it out by hand. Be careful not to spill coolant onto the engine's components.
- 7). Use a socket wrench to rotate the crank at the front of the engine. This will rotate the timing belt. Stop when you can see the timing belt gear.
- 8). Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt from the timing belt gear and remove it from the timing belt.
