How to Run a Three-Phase Motor
- 1). Connect the motor to a three-phase power source such as a three-phase generator or a single-phase power source that you can convert to three phases. Connecting to a three-phase source only requires you to turn on the motor to make it work, but converting single-phase to three-phase power requires additional steps.
- 2). Attach a single-phase motor to the three-phase motor through an auxiliary port and turn on the single-phase motor. Turn on the three-phase motor and it will begin to run off of the smaller motor. The motor has to be operating from a separate power source either electrically or manually if you want to run it off of a standard single-phase outlet.
- 3). Turn on the three-phase motor and it will begin to run. Since it is running off of a single-phase source it will not run as smoothly as it would from a three-phase source or at its peak performance, but it will run and power machinery. The only way to get ideal efficiency and cost effectiveness is to connect it to a three-phase source, but that isn't always available.
