How to Add a Bathroom Addition

• 1). Decide where your new bathroom should go. Whether you are utilizing space your home already has or adding onto the structure, choose a wall that borders an existing bathroom or the kitchen for plumbing purposes.
  
  
• 2). Determine how large you want the bathroom to be and what features you want to include. Powder bathrooms, which add the least amount of value to your home, take up approximately 18 square feet. However, a full bathroom with a separate tub and shower typically uses at least 35 square feet.
  
  
• 3). Check your local building and zoning codes to determine which permits you need and whether there are any room size minimums and other restrictions. Skipping this step could result in fines and your project being halted.
  
  
• 4). Contact at least three contractors to get price quotes and details on what they can or will do compared with what you want. Choose the contractor you feel the most comfortable with, not necessarily the least expensive one. Draw up a contract that states specifically what you expect, how long the project should take, how much the project will cost and when the contractor will be paid. This should be agreeable to both of you. Hire an attorney to facilitate the contract if your contractor doesn't have a basic contract which you both fill in what is expected.
  
  
• 5). Pick a date for the work to begin. Have all necessary parts, such as the new sink, toilet, shower/tub, tile (or the flooring of your choice), lighting fixtures and exhaust fan or windows available to the contractor in a clean, out-of-the-way place that is easily accessible to the contractor.
  
  
• 6). Examine the contractor's work and finish paying him as agreed. Proceed to decorating your bathroom with paint (if the contractor didn't finish the walls), rugs, candles, shelves and any other accessories you wish to add.
