How to Store Elephant Ears
- 1). Cut stems off the Elephant Ear plant, leaving 2 to 4 inches of stem above the soil. Do this shortly after the first frost has occurred.
- 2). Dig up the bulbs. Using a spade, carefully loosen the soil around the plant, keeping the spade several inches away from the roots and bulbs so as not to damage them.
- 3). Dry out the bulbs. Remove excess soil from the outside of the bulb and roots and set them out of direct sunlight and wind for one to two days.
- 4). Inspect the bulbs for disease or pests. If an infestation is present, dust the infected bulbs with an insecticide/fungicide mixture.
- 5). Set the bulbs in either vermiculite or peat moss. This helps protect them while wintering.
- 6). Place the wrapped bulbs inside a paper bag and label it with a permanent marker.
- 7). Store the Elephant Ear bulbs in a cool section of the house for the winter. A basement or crawl space works well.
