    Trees and Shrubs

    • Some of the most abundant and diverse plants in the Detroit, Oregon area include trees and shrubs which are known as "woody plants." Trees range from 20 to 100 feet and include conifers, with needle point or scaled leaves, and broad-leafed deciduous and evergreen trees. Native Detroit-area trees includes the Pacific Dogwood, which has green foliage and green flowers with red fruits or seeds, blooms in mid spring, and reaches a height of 75 feet at its full maturity. Shrubs in Detroit range from 18 feet to 20 inches high and include tree-like plants as well as fruit bushes, such as the wild blackberry, which sprouts flowers and edible fruit.

    Miscellaneous Perennials

    • Perennials are plants which live for more than two years and are abundant in Detroit, Oregon. Perennials in the Detroit area--not including trees, shrubs, grasses and ferns--are often flowers, herbs or spices. Some native perennials include wild ginger, woolly sunflower, Mariposa lily, yellow monkey flower and stream violet. The iris is particularly abundant to the area because of Detroit's warm summers and mild winters, and they flower in an array of different colors besides the blue and purple they are known for.

    Grasses

    • Grasses in Detroit can be annual and perennial, and include blue-eyed grass, yellow-eyed grass, slough sedge, tufted hairgrass and Roemer's fescue. Tufted hairgrass is a native perennial which grows in wet and moist areas and is salt tolerant. When full-grown the grass is densely tufted, course and bright green in color, and has fountain-like seed culms which bloom in early spring.

    Ferns

    • Ferns are large and bushy and can often grow to a larger width than height, sprouting leaves but not flowers or seeds. Common ferns to Detroit are the maidenhair fern, the lady fern, the deer fern and the sword fern. The sword fern is the most abundant fern in the northwest, and can be used in almost any type of planting as it is easy to grow, and reaches a height of 3 feet with clumpy evergreen leaves.
