How to Install a Transmission Pan
- 1). Scrape the mating surfaces of the transmission pan and the transmission with a razor scraper. Ensure there is no gasket material on either surface.
- 2). Spread a bead of oil soluable grease around the top of the transmission pan by squeezing it out of the tube. This will prevent the gasket from moving while you install the pan.
- 3). Lay the gasket flat around the surface by hand. Ensure all the bolt holes match up to the bolt holes on the surface of the pan.
- 4). Place the transmission pan up to the transmission and start a bolt by hand on both sides of the pan. Hand tighten them as much as possible.
- 5). Start the remaining bolts around the transmission pan by hand. Once all the bolts are started, tighten them with a socket wrench. Tighten in a criss-cross pattern to ensure all the bolts are tightened and the pan creates a seal.
- 6). Lower the vehicle to the ground if the vehicle was raised up for easier access. Pull the drain pan out from under the vehicle.
- 7). Open the hood for access to the engine compartment. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick toward the back of the engine compartment. The dipstick is generally labeled or red in color.
- 8). Pull the dipstick out of the tube and replace with a funnel. Pour in the required amount of transmission fluid. This is designated in the owner's manual. Pull the funnel out of the tube. Clean the dipstick off with a rag and insert back into the dipstick tube. Pull the dipstick out and verify how much fluid is on the dipstick. The fluid should stop at the full mark. Keep pouring in half quart intervals if not.
- 9). Start the car and allow it to run for five minutes. Slowly shift the car from "Park" to the "Low 1" position and back to "Park." Leave the car running and check the transmission fluid one more time. Fill if necessary.
