How to Make Boards With a Bench Top Band Saw
- 1). Rip a thin strip of wood the same width as your band saw's miter slot using your table saw.
- 2). Cut two 6-inch sections from the ends of the remaining plywood. Attach these two sections to the ends of the large piece of plywood with wood screws, forming a wide U-shape.
- 3). Place the thin strip of wood into the miter slot. Position the U-shaped jig over the slot with the long edge barely touching the band saw blade. Check to see that the jig is square to the miter saw slot, and attach the jig to the strip with a few wood screws.
- 4). Move the jig to a work table. Position the wood log into the jig so that the cut ends of the log are just inside the ends of the jig, and the middle of the log is centered on the edge of the jig that was touching the band saw blade. Attach the jig to the log with wood screws through each end of the jig.
- 5). Place the front edge of the jig on the band saw, with the strip in the miter slot. With the resaw blade installed, turn on the band saw. Ease the log forward, cutting the log in half down the middle with the band saw.
- 6). Remove the jig. Adjust the band saw's fence so that it is the distance of the desired board's thickness away from the resaw blade.
- 7). Hold the flat side of the half log firmly against the fence, and guide the half log through the band saw blade, cutting a board from the log. Repeat until all boards have been cut.
