How to Check the Fuel Lines and Fuel Pump in a VW Passat

    • 1). Raise the rear end of the Passat with a floor jack, and support it by the frame with jack stands. Slide under the car, and locate the fuel tank, which is centered under the backseat. The fuel pump is in front of the tank on the passenger side, and the fuel lines run from the pump along the bottom of the car to the engine compartment.

    • 2). Examine the fuel lines for dents, crushed areas or kinks. If you have an older model Passat with the reinforced rubber lines, then look for dry rot particularly around the ends connected to the ports. Replace any damaged lines.

    • 3). Slide a bucket under the port on the fuel pump, and use a wrench to disconnect the fuel line. Turn the engine over, and look at the gas. If it's pumping into the bucket, then it's working properly. Turn off the engine. If the gas was dripping or drizzling into the bucket, then replace the fuel pump.

    • 4). Lower the rear end of the Passat. If you keep having problems with your fuel supply, have a professional do some further diagnostic tests.
