    • 1). Select a well-drained area in your yard with light shade. If you do not have a well-drained location for the bulbs, build a raised bed for better drainage.

    • 2). Amend the soil with 4 inches of compost along with 3 pounds of a slow-release organic 6-6-6 fertilizer per 100 square feet. Level the soil and moisten with water.

    • 3). Plant the amaryllis bulbs in neat rows in the prepared bed 12 to 15 inches apart, with the top of the bulb sticking out from the ground. Water well, making sure the ground is moist.

    • 4). Apply a 2-inch layer of mulch over the planted bulbs to prevent weeds from sprouting and retain moisture.
