How to Replace a Damaged Piece of Siding
- 1). Locate the piece of siding directly above the damaged piece of siding and look underneath this piece. You will see a small notch cut into the strip of siding near the end of the panel.
- 2). Push the vinyl siding removal tool all the way up into the notch of the siding panel above the damaged panel with the hook of the tool facing out.
- 3). Pull down on the siding removal tool to unhook the siding panel above the damaged piece. You may need to repeat this movement several times until the siding comes loose.
- 4). Repeat Steps 2 and 3 on the opposite end of the panel to remove the piece. Now the nail strip of the damaged panel will be exposed.
- 5). Remove the nails from the nail strip with the end of a claw hammer or a pry bar.
- 6). Push down on the damaged piece of panel to remove it from the home. Pay attention to how the siding is attached at the bottom of the panel so that you can install a new panel easily.
- 7). Cut a new piece of siding to the same size as the damaged piece with a pair of tin snips or a hand saw.
- 8). Attach the new panel to the home by pushing it down into place where you removed the old panel.
- 9). Press the top of the panel flat against the nail strip.
- 10
Attach the panel by installing new nails into the existing nail holes. Allow the head of each nail to stick out approximately 1/32 inch to accommodate for expansion and contraction due to heat and humidity. - 11
Push the upper piece of siding back into place and insert the vinyl siding removal tool underneath the siding. Pull down on the tool to snap the upper panel into place on top of the newly installed panel.
