How to Identify Active Termites
- 1). Search your yard for termite tunnels. They could be near fence posts or near your house.
- 2). Dig into any tunnels you find and look for termites. An inactive tunnel appears dry and crumbly and has no visible termites. Termites are visible in active tunnels.
- 3). Inspect the interior and exterior of your house's foundation for signs of termites and their tunnels.
- 4). Look inside the house for winged termites flying around. Termites have straight antennae, a broad waist and equally sized wings, whereas flying ants have bent antennae, narrow waists and different-sized wings.
- 5). Look at for ribbonlike voids running across the grain of any wood inside the house. Scrutinize the plaster or drywall for small holes with traces of soil around the edges.
- 6). Look for rippled or sunken wallpaper or paint, which could indicate termites are burrowing in the wood behind the paint or wallpaper.
