    • 1). Pry off all the floor trim around the room with the pry bar, except the trim that runs parallel to the floorboards and is furthest from the damaged area. Pry the trim off carefully so you can reinstall it. Use your hammer to tap the nails out of the trim. Set the trim aside.

    • 2). Locate the first course of floorboards by the wall that's parallel to the damaged area and closest to it. There will be a roughly 1/2-inch space between the edge of the floorboards and wall (the space was previously hidden by the trim). Push on the floorboard at the end of the course, pushing it toward the space and working it until it comes loose from the tongue-and-groove connection on the other side.

    • 3). Repeat the process with each board in along the wall, separating them from the next course. Leave them sitting near their previous positions as you loosen them. Proceed across the floor course by course, loosening all the boards but keeping them in order where they were. Continue until you get to the damaged floorboards.

    • 4). Remove the damaged boards. Set the replacement boards in their place. Put the rest of the floor back together in reverse order of how you took it apart, pushing the boards back together at their edges. There should be a gap at the edge of the final course, by the wall.

    • 5). Put the floor trim back in place around the edges of the floor, using your trim nailer.
