How to Remove Tile From a Shower Surround
- 1). Pry the screw cover cap off of your faucet handle or handles in your shower. Place the flat tip of your screwdriver under the edge of the cap and pry up. Remove the retaining screw in the center of your handle or handles. Pull out on your handle to remove it from the stem valve.
- 2). Grasp the escutcheon ring and turn it counter clockwise to remove it. Repeat this step on your other handle if you have one. Your escutcheon ring looks like a metal tube; it is used to cover your stem valve or valves.
- 3). Remove the screws from the metal cover plate that is up against your shower wall and slide it off. If you have two handles, the metal cover plates will just slide off.
- 4). Place drop cloths on the floor of your shower to keep falling tile from shattering.
- 5). Put on your safety glasses and your leather gloves. Broken tile is extremely sharp.
- 6). Bust two or three tiles with your hammer. It does not matter where you begin. Busting out a few tiles will expose the edges of the surrounding tiles.
- 7). Place the edge of your stiff putty knife against the lower edge of a tile; hit the handle of your putty knife with your hammer. The blade of your putty knife will slide under the tile. Pull up on the handle of your putty knife to pop the tile loose from your wall. Continue this pattern until you have completely removed your tile shower surround.
- 8). Carry the broken tiles out of your shower in the 5-gallon bucket.
