How to Install an Axe Head
- 1). Look to see if there are metal wedges attached to the top of the ax handle. Pull out the metal wedges with pliers to reuse the handle.
- 2). Trim the edges at the top of the handle with a rasp, if necessary, to fit the new ax head. The opening of the ax head should fit snugly on the handle.
- 3). Apply linseed oil to the top of the ax handle with a clean cloth or rag.
- 4). Position the handle into the opening of the ax head. Strike the bottom of the handle with the rubber mallet. This will wedge the handle into the ax head.
- 5). Insert a metal wedge into the eye of the ax. Strike the metal wedge using the hand-held sledge to secure the ax head to the handle. Add a second metal wedge if the ax head is loose on the handle.
