How to Repair Ceramic Tiles With Mortar
- 1). Use a grout saw or, if the grout line is small, utility knife to cut the grout surrounding the cracked or chipped tile.
- 2). Remove the damaged tile by placing a masonry chisel near one of the corners and tapping the chisel with a hammer. Once the corner is removed, use the chisel to finish removing the damaged tile.
- 3). Soak the dried thinset with water for approximately 15 minutes. This will help to loosen the thinset so it can be easily removed.
- 4). Mix the thinset mortar per manufacturer directions and apply it to the floor. First use the flat edge of the trowel, then the notched edge to remove the excess.
- 5). Place the tile directly on top of the thinset mortar. Leave an even space on all sides of the tile for the grout. Tiles that need to be cut should be cut with a tile saw. Allow the mortar to dry overnight.
- 6). Mix the grout per manufacturer directions and apply it to the tile joints. The joints should be completely filled with grout when finished.
- 7). Use a sponge to wipe the excess grout from the tile. The sponge should be damp, but not overly wet. Allow to dry before use.
