How to Pickle Wood Blinds With Window Trim
- 1). Place a stepladder under the wood blinds, and remove them from the window. Some blinds simply pull out from the top of the window, while others have screws that must be removed with a screwdriver.
- 2). Remove screws from the blind hardware at the top of the window trim, using a screwdriver. Put the hardware and screws in a safe location so that you don't lose them.
- 3). Put on disposable gloves, and place 1 to 2 tsp. of a liquid sanding product on a clean cloth. Wipe the top and bottom of each wooden slat with the liquid sander to prepare it for pickling. Also apply liquid sander to the window trim.
- 4). Move the blinds to a well ventilated location. Place the threaded end of an eye hook screw into the top left side of the wood blinds, and twist it clockwise until it is secure. Insert another eye hook into the right side of the blinds. Thread twine through each hook, and hang the blinds up so you can paint them.
- 5). Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of white paint. You can use either oil-based or latex paint. Add 1 quart of water to latex paint and 1 quart of paint thinner to oil-based paint. Mix well with a paint stirrer.
- 6). Lay a drop cloth under the blinds to catch any drips. Dip a paintbrush into the mixture, and drag it across the side of the bucket so that it doesn't drip. Paint the top and bottom of each slat in the wood blinds, starting at the top slat and working your way downward. Use long, even strokes to keep brush marks from showing when the paint dries.
- 7). Set the brush down and immediately pick up a clean rag. Lightly wipe the top and bottom of each slat to remove some of the paint.
- 8). Repeat the process to pickle the window trim in the same manner. Start at the top of the window trim and work down the sides, finishing at the windowsill.
- 9). Allow the blinds and the trim to dry for 24 hours, and then reinstall the blinds in their proper location using the original hardware.
