Green & Blue Algae
- Green algae is the most common type, with over 7000 different species. Green algae contains chlorophyll like land plants, but requires an aquatic living environment.
- Blue algae, commonly known as blue-green algae, are made up of cyanobacteria. This algae is happiest growing in nitrogen and phosphorous-rich areas.
- Algae are growing plants that depend on sunlight for photosynthesis and life. Algae is microscopic, becoming obvious when it blooms in the spring.
- Blue-green algae thrives in Florida's freshwater and brackish areas. Green algae can be found in almost any international aquatic environment, both freshwater and sea water.
- Algae in aquariums and fish ponds forms an important part of the marine environment, both as food sources and oxygen producers. But some blue-green algae contains toxins, and can cause problems as part of the food chain.
- Both blue and green algae are commonly used as dietary supplements. The two most common supplemental algae products are Spirulina and Aphanizomen flow-aquae.
