Trees to Use for Privacy
- Create a dense evergreen privacy hedge using American holly trees. American holly grows quickly; mature trees can reach heights in excess of 20 feet with 6-foot spreads. Plant American holly trees in an area of your property that enjoys full to partial sun and which has good drainage. Hardy in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5 through 9, American holly trees produce spring flowers in shades of cream and white.
- The fastest growing tree on earth is also an evergreen that can provide privacy for your property. Bamboo is available in more than 700 species that spread quickly to create a privacy screen. Golden bamboo is one popular choice for living fences. Golden bamboo stalks grow up to 2 inches thick with heights that can exceed 30 feet. Bamboo trees are not as dense as other evergreen trees, but the growth rate can create a privacy screen faster than others.
- One of the fastest growing dense evergreen trees that you can plant for privacy are Thuja green giants. After the tree becomes established, usually in one year, Thuja growth rates average 5 feet annually. Thuja green giant trees are also drought tolerant, resist diseases and are not prone to insect infestations. If you plant the trees side by side for a privacy screen, mature Thujas can spread up to 5 feet and soar to over 50 feet.
- Leyland cypress trees have dense, blue-green foliage and are hardy in Zones 6 through 10. Plant these evergreen beauties in full sun and growth rates can average 3 feet annually. Full-grown Leyland cypress trees can stand up to 70 feet tall and reach spreads of up to 25 feet.
- Carolina cherry laurel trees have dense foliage with fragrant white flowers in late winter and early spring, followed by blue-black fruits. These evergreens can reach heights of up to 30 feet with spreads of 35 feet. Hardy in Zones 7 through 9, Carolina cherry laurel trees make a decorative privacy screen year-round.
