How to Measure Windows for Replacement Windows

    • 1). Remove any curtains or shades that might get in the way of your measuring. You don't have to remove the hardware, just the window covering. Take all of your measurements from the inside of the house.

    • 2). Get the width by taking three measurements: top, middle and bottom. Make sure all of your measurements are taken from window jamb to window jamb and not measurements of the glass. In older homes, not all measurements are plumb and so you need to make sure that you take several measurements. You will need to use the smallest measurement of the three widths, if there is any variation.

    • 3). Find the height by taking three measurements again, but this time, the left, the right and the center. Make sure all of your measurements are taken from window jamb to window jamb and not measurements of the glass. Choose the smallest measurement for the height.

    • 4). Determine the depth of your window by measuring from the point where the outside of the window slides along the window jamb, straight in to the inside edge where the window slides along the inside window jamb. Typically this is about a 3 1/2 inch pocket.
