How Do I Change the Belt on a 1990 Chevy C1500?
- 1). Open the hood and lock it in place.
- 2). Inspect the top of the black, plastic cover that surrounds the fan for the serpentine belt routing diagram. The diagram for the 1990 Chevy C1500 truck is located near the middle of the plastic cover. The routing diagram gives the instructions for installing the new belt onto the pulleys.
- 3). Locate the belt tensioner device on the front of the engine. The tensioner device has a spring- loaded component on one end and a roller pulley on the bottom end. The tensioner device on the 1990 Chevy C1500 models is located near the top-front of the engine. To rotate the tensioner device, use the bolt head in the center of the roller pulley.
- 4). Turn the roller pulley counterclockwise with the breaker bar and a metric socket. Once the tension is off the belt, slide it out from the underside of the roller pulley. Then, turn the radiator fan with your hands so that one of the fan blades is at the top of the engine. Pull the belt around the fan blade toward the radiator. Continue to turn each fan blade to the top of the engine and slide the belt around each fan blade until the belt is completely free of the blades. Then, pull the belt out of the engine compartment.
- 5). Lower the new belt into the engine compartment between the radiator and the fan. Route the new belt around each fan blade and around each accessory pulley. Use the belt routing diagram to properly route the belt around the accessory pulleys.
- 6). Rotate the tensioner device counterclockwise again with the breaker bar and socket. Slide the new belt under the roller pulley. Release the tensioner and remove the breaker bar. Look over the new belt to make sure that the belt is properly routed around each pulley and that the belt is seated inside of each pulley.
- 7). Crank the 1990 Chevy C1500 and let the engine run for about 15 seconds. Turn the engine off and recheck the belt. Close the hood.
