Flowers That Bloom in Autumn
- Autumn is the harvest months between September and November where the weather turns a little colder and the greens of the spring and summer change into brilliant reds, oranges, yellows and golds. Although it may seem like the end of the growing season, there are still some late bloomers to brighten up any fall day.
- Chrysanthemums are the ultimate hardy autumn (and winter) flower, followed by poinsettias, certain asters, Queen Anne's lace, baby's breath, camillas, daisies, certain types of lilies, salvia, carnations, amaranthus, anemone, ornamental kales, flowering cabbages, freesia, zinnia, iris, juniper, china berry and cockscomb. These flowers have constitutions strong enough to make it through the chilly autumn nights and thrive.
- Marigolds, orchids, roses, sunflowers and lilies can all bloom during the autumn months, some can even last all the way to November. If the weather becomes too cold and damp, however, it will not suit these plants and you may have to judiciously prune their brown and wilting blooms out of your autumn garden.
- The hibiscus flower will continue to bloom and thrive even as the weather drops down to 50 degrees. This lush, tropical flower is a large bloom that comes in colors from pastels to the traditional fall reds and yellows. Adding the unusual blossom of a hardy hibiscus to an autumn garden will create excellent variety among the usual fall blooms.
