Landscaping Around a Sunroom

    • 1). Spray a paint line on the ground around the outside of your sunroom to locate where you want to add landscaping. The line will give you a visual of how much space the plants will take up, and you can adjust it if necessary. There is no need to be rigid if you don't want to. Make the line curve and turn however you want it to.

    • 2). Choose plant types that you have used around the rest of your home to place next to the sunroom. This will give the new space continuity. Select plants based on height. If the sunroom is low to the ground, you don't want overly tall plants that completely shade the area or wide plants that block the view. On the other hand, if the sunroom is up off the ground or as high as the second floor, then taller shrubs would work better.

    • 3). Dig holes that will fit the size of the root balls for your plants and test the drainage by filling one or two of the holes half-full of water. Wait an hour and see if the level went down. If it did, then your soil drains. If your soil didn't drain, use a tiller to mix mulch and top soil with the top 6 inches of dirt to improve it.

    • 4). Set the plants in the holes so that the top of the root balls are level with the surface. Fill in with a mix of the dirt you dug up and top soil.

    • 5). Install bird feeders and birdhouses to attract birds, and plant flowering trees and other vegetation to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Hang feeders and houses in trees or attach them to 4x4 posts installed in the ground.

    • 6). Cover exposed soil with mulch to protect roots, keep weeds from growing and trap moisture.
