How to Check VINs on Mobile Homes

    • 1). Check the registration information on a motorized mobile home to locate the VIN. It is a 17-digit alphanumeric string. If registration is not required in your state on mobile homes or if the registration is not available, locate the VIN on a metal plate under the hood of an RV. If you have a mobile or manufactured home, locate the serial number instead of the VIN. You can find it on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Certification Label, a metal plate attached to the outside of the home, usually on the foremost crossbar. If you cannot find the certification label, locate the HUD Data Plate, a paper label with the serial number that is located on the main electrical panel, in a kitchen cabinet or in a bedroom closet.

    • 2). Contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles if you need to confirm registration on a motorized vehicle. See the References section for a link to DMV.org, which provides links to each state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

    • 3). Order a vehicle history report on a motorized mobile home to determine the owner history and accident history on the mobile home. Use an online service such as one of those listed in the Resources section. Contact your local county's property tax office to research the history of ownership on a non-motorized mobile home or manufactured home.
