Heat to boiling 4 cups of water in a pot. Set two glass jars onto a flat surface, and pour 2 cups of boiling water into each one. - 2

Pour 3 cups of sugar into one of the jars, and 3 cups of salt into the other. Stir the mixtures well with a spoon. Add 5 drops of food coloring to each jar to change the color. It may be helpful to turn the different solutions different colors to better distinguish them. Mix the solutions well. - 3

Soak two wooden or bamboo chopsticks in water for 15 minutes. Place one wooden or bamboo chopstick into each jar, allowing the chopstick to rest against the side of the jar. - 4

Allow the two solutions to sit on a flat surface for at least five days. After the allotted time has passed, study the crystallization with your children, and note the differences between the salt crystals and the sugar crystals.
