Special Kitchen Cabinet Ideas
- If you're thinking about remodeling your kitchen, the type of kitchen cabinet you choose can make your kitchen look bland or turn it in to something special. Kitchen cabinets come in a variety of styles, from modern metal cabinets to traditional wood versions. No matter what type of cabinets you have, you can add your own special touch with a little creativity and forward thinking.
- For kitchen cabinets that are truly special, build them yourself. With some woodworking know-how and some basic tools, you can create exactly the cabinets you want, from shelving to doors. Keep in mind that building your own cabinets can take a while, especially if you're fitting it in around a day job. If you've never done any woodworking, building cabinets is probably not the project to start with since it can take so long.
- To make a special touch on cabinets that are already installed, add color. Apply a coat of paint in a color you love, or cover cabinet door inserts with a fun fabric. If allover color isn't for you, paint the inside of your cabinet shelves to create contrast. For a touch of color, use a stencil to create a border or add a little detail to a cabinet door, countertop or other section of your cabinets.
- If you're planning to stay in the house for years and you want to invest in a kitchen you love, pay to have your cabinet doors carved by hand. You can add a flower motif or any other element your woodworker or cabinetry maker can create to the doors. Carved cabinets are always wood, and due to the nature of the work, every door will probably not appear completely uniform compared to the door next to it.
- If you want something special but you're trying to bring light into the space, get glass-fronted cabinet doors and have the glass customized. Purchase customized etched glass from the cabinet company itself with your family name, crest or another favorite design. For a more colorful approach, find a local stained-glass maker, and have them create special stained glass panes for your cabinets. You can sketch out the design you want yourself on a piece of paper, or have the artist draw one up for you. Most stained-glass makers will also let you pick out the colors you want to use.
