    Lilies

    • Carolina lilies are yellow, orange or red with brown spots. The thick soft petals are unusual in that they bend backward when in full bloom. The Drummond lily boasts of long stems with several blooms on the end. Purple and white petals adorn the flower. The bulb can be crushed and used topically to relieve the pain of bee stings. The bulb can also be eaten and has the taste of mild onions. It is also known as the Drummond wild onion.

    Roses

    • The Carolina rose is a white perennial flower that grows in a semi-shrub formation. It is very similar to the Carolina rock rose. The Carolina rock rose is also a mounding perennial with one notable difference from the Carolina rose. The rock rose comes in a variety of colors including yellow, salmon and purple.

    Honeysuckle

    • Japanese honeysuckle now grows abundantly in southern Louisiana. Despite its beauty and sweet fragrance, this plant is considered a nuisance as it crowds out other species of wildflowers. The flower is small and white and the petals form a deep cup.
      Trumpet honeysuckle is designed perfectly for hummingbirds. The pink flowers grow in bunches and offer deep cups of nectar that are perfect for the size of the hummingbird's beak.

    Cone Flowers

    • The purple cone flower is also known as echinacea. It is often harvested for its roots, which are used to boost the human immune system. This flower has a tall stem and light purple daisy-like flowers. The marsh coneflower is similar in appearance to the purple coneflower, but its petals are yellow. As this flower ages and spreads, it takes on the appearance of a black-eyed Susan flower.

    Climbing Flowers

    • Wisteria is a thick climbing vine that produces flowers in pink, purple, white, or blue. It grows best on pergolas and strong trellises. This plant requires strong support as it can grow very heavy. The vines become thick and trunk-like with age. Morning glories are named for their tendency to open in early morning and close by mid-afternoon. The most common colors of this flower are blue and purple. White clematis is a hardy perennial that climbs in clumps over fences, and up trees. This plant has been used by Native American tribes to heal body aches and to reduce swelling. It produces small white clumps of flowers from May to August.
