How Do I Graft Weeping Trees?
- 1). Expose the rootstock to cold weather for 6 weeks and then return them indoors for 48 hours before grafting.
- 2). Cut a downward notch ¾ of an inch to 1 inch long into the rootstock, scraping both bark and wood away. Cut into the bottom of the notch, removing a chunk of wood from the rootstock.
- 3). Choose a grafting weeping tree that has a trunk that is the same size (or smaller) as the rootstock. Cut a sloping angle ¾ of an inch to 1 inch long into the bottom end, exposing the wood below the bark.
- 4). Place the cut ends together, making sure they have full contact with each other.
- 5). Wrap the ends together with grafting wire or tape to secure them in place. Paint over the area with grafting paint to seal the trees and protect them from disease and pests.
- 6). Remove the wrap when the graft is completed. Do not allow the tree to grow around the wrap.
