How Do I Install Roofing Shingles with Back Tar Strips?
- 1). Wear safety goggles and sturdy shoes. Staple the tar paper over the exposed roof starting from the bottom and rolling the paper up. Staple the edges of the paper to the roof as you go along.
- 2). Nail a drip-edge piece under the felt paper every 10 inches along the gutter board. Nail a drip-edge piece every 10 inches along the top of the paper as well.
- 3). Cut the back tabs off of the starter row of shingles. Do not remove the plastic backing over the tar strip. Lay the shingles over the drip edges by about 1/4 of an inch. Make it stick out far enough, so water cannot seep under the edge of the shingle. Nail the corners of the shingles in place with the pneumatic nails.
- 4). Start the first row of shingles. Always work from the bottom of the roof to the top. Rather than work the entire row at once, you can work diagonally to the top. This allows multiple people to attach the roof at once. Lay the full length shingles over the starter shingles, leaving about 2 inches of starter shingle exposed. Nail the shingles in place.
- 5). Cut 6 inches off of the second layer of shingle from the bottom, leaving the tar strip. Install the second layer of shingle with nails on each corner. Leave about 5 inches of exposed shingles between rows. Stagger the edges of the shingles, so the edges do not align. This would allow water to seep between the shingles.
- 6). Continue to work up the roof, alternating full-sized and shortened shingle rows. Stop when you reach the ridge vent.
- 7). Trim off any excess shingle that overlaps the ridge vent. Attach the ridge vent using 3-inch-long nails. Nail the roof vent shingles over the top of the plastic roof vent.
- 8). Use tar placed inside a caulking gun to glue down any loose shingles from the roof vent or any other shingles.
