How to Grow Variegated Liriope Lilies
- 1). Select a location for the variegated liriope in your yard that is in the shade or partial sun. Add 2 to 3 inches of compost to the soil and work it into the depth of 8 to 10 inches. Add 2 to 3 inches of compost around the liriope once a year in the spring for fertilization.
- 2). Dig holes for the variegated liriope as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Space the holes 12 to 18 inches apart. Place the variegated liriope in the holes and fill them with dirt.
- 3). Keep the soil around the base of the variegated liriope moist at all time, but don't over water. Add about 1 to 2 inches of water to the plants a week.
- 4). Deadhead the flowers when they fade. Cut the flowers from the plant with a pair of shears. Cut off the leaves of the variegated liriope in the fall after the die back. Cut the leaves back to the crown of the plant.
- 5). Mulch around the variegated liriope in the winter to protect the roots from the cold. Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer on top of the liriope as well.
