    • 1). Grow the Musa basjoo banana in an area that gets full sun all day and protection from the wind.

    • 2). Water the banana plant to keep the soil moist during the growing season. Keep an eye on the soil during exceptionally hot periods and water when necessary.

    • 3). Fertilize the Musa basjoo banana plant with 1 cup of 10-10-10 fertilizer every other week. Sprinkle the fertilizer on the soil, 3 inches from the trunk, completely around the plant. Water to settle the fertilizer.

    • 4). Add a 3-inch layer of mulch to the soil around the banana plant. Keep it 2 inches from the base of the banana and spread it completely around it. Rake it up in the spring and add a fresh layer.

    • 5). Protect the banana plant in the colder regions of zone 5. It should die back as the freezes arrive, at which time 14 to 18 inches of mulch should be piled over it. Remove the mulch in the spring, after all danger of frost has passed.
