    • 1). Choose a planting site suited to growing blue palo verde trees. Select a site with sandy or gravelly soil and full sun. If possible, choose a site where water pools slightly in spring since the species responds well to seasonal flood conditions.

    • 2). Dig a planting hole corresponding to twice the volume of the original nursery container. Wet the soil before excavating the hole with a shovel since moistened soil will hold the shape without caving in. Fill the bottom half of the hole with the sandy or gravelly soil native to the site.

    • 3). Remove the blue palo verde tree from its nursery container. Lay the container on its side. Lift the bottom of the container a few inches off the ground while rocking it back and forth. Have a second person guide the rootball out of the container and onto the ground.

    • 4). Slide the blue palo verde tree into the planting hole. Rock the rootball gently to settle it into the soil in the bottom of the hole. Ensure the base of the trunk is no more than 1/2 inch below ground level.

    • 5). Have an assistant hold the trunk of the blue palo verde tree upright while you fill in around the roots with additional soil. Run a garden hose on low volume into the hole while filling it to settle the soil and alleviate any air pockets.

    • 6). Continue filling the hole until the roots are buried and the planting hole is flush with the surrounding ground. Tamp the soil around the blue palo verde tree with your feet to further squeeze out any trapped air.

    • 7). Watch for growth in one to two months after transplanting the blue palo verde tree.
